Saturday 9:00 am – 12:00 noon & 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
[Course Fee: $90]
Darby and Joanne will lead us through the Primary Series focusing on alignment of the shoulders, collar bone, chest and rib cage. Opening the upper body increases length in the lower back, making standing postures and forward bends less strenuous. When the shoulders have space to work and are not all bound up with effort and muscular contraction, the front of the body can be more easily lifted into vinyasa. Using their keen eyes to give us an idea of what to concentrate on will, in the end, also effect backbend with a more flexible upper spine. Learning where strain exists within the maze of Primary Series will give us something to take home and work on over time. Participants need not have memorized the entire Primary Series to enjoy the practice and benefit from this five hour Saturday workshop.
Darby has been a
practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga since 1979 and has taught
in Australia and Canada. He was initiated into Ashtanga by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, studying with him from 1979 to 1983 in Mysore, India. Darby has been certified by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to teach the original Ashtanga method. His teaching is dynamic and direct while giving students the essence of the energy of Yoga. Darby and his wife, Joanne, currently spend half the year studying with Guruji and enjoying the pace of life in Mysore. Darby is the co-founder of Ashtanga Montreal and has just released his first video, The Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series.
