I never really wanted to teach yoga, until I realized I was teaching yoga all the time…at home with roommates, on a Saturday night at a party, at work (with my clients and coworkers), at a prison I do HIV outreach in, with neighbors during snow storms, in the library while I was supposed to be studying, with a friend who is doing physical therapy, with the stranger next to me on the airplane, with my mom who doesn’t really like to stretch, during a rest from a bike ride with friends, and even over the phone across the country. I love to share yoga. Yoga has become a part of my every day life, it is greatly therapeutic for my mind and body, and I know that anyone could benefit from being more conscious of their breath, body and mind connection.
Emily Garrett is who I started practicing yoga with; her class was incredibly healing for me. She is who I think of as I learn to teach gentle and flowing sessions, and what guides me to study more about yoga therapy. Then Ashtanga invaded my life, and in the past ten months I have practiced many, many hours with Kathy McNames, Scott York and Erik Kocho, who taught me so much with very few words (how thankful I am for them!). The transformation I have felt since I have been practicing regularly is quite staggering.
I work for Vermont CARES here in Burlington. I am a case manager for people with HIV/AIDS, and I also do HIV outreach, education and testing. I am thankful for my community at Yoga Vermont and the ways that they reach out to our organization and others doing great work.
