Jenny Sugar, or Sugar as most people know her, was first introduced to Iyengar Yoga by Larry White in 1999. Not long after that first class, a dear friend of hers said that she had to check out Yoga Vermont. She got hooked instantly on Ashtanga because it just fit perfectly into what she believed most, which was that people need to surround themselves with people and things that encourage creativity, playfulness, individuality as well as community, love, support and strength. Her yoga practice has been a unique journey including all these aspects and more. She feels that yoga will forever be a part of her journey through life.
Sugar started teaching not long after she began practicing at Yoga Vermont. One Saturday morning, Sugar was all pumped to take the 9:30 am class, when Kath said, "Sug, I need you to go downstairs and teach Kripalu." "But I've never taught before and besides, what's Kripalu?" she responded. And Kath said, "Exactly."
A Vinyasa class with Sugar begins with slowly opening the body and mind in preparation for the intense and challenging sequence of flowing movements. She encourages everyone to listen to their body, follow their breath, have fun, and to try EVERYTHING. Her philosophy is that everyone has those fears and doubts that hold them back, but you'll never get passed them if you don't try. She says, "Get a new perspective. Stand on your hands." Although her class can involve difficult asanas, she does a great job breaking them down to make them seem more accessible. The music is for inspiration, and the Savasana adjustments are to honor, relax, and reward her students for their efforts in class, but more importantly, in their daily lives.
When Sugar is not at the studio, she is a full-time Writer/Editor for Fitsugar.com, an online blog that focuses on women's health, wellness and fitness. Whenever she has free time, she enjoys doing anything creative, be it singing, playing guitar, sewing, quilting, knitting, beading, or painting. She has an allergy to gluten, so she also enjoys making treats she can eat.
Yoga for Sugar has taught her so much about herself. The incredible community at Yoga Vermont has offered her continual and unconditional love and support from the very beginning. She is grateful to everyone involved in her Yoga World, and hopes to give back all that she has received through her teaching efforts.
