Kara’s Bio 2007
I live in Vergennes with my husband Chris, our son
Silas, and our dog Mazzy. I am originally from
Laconia, New Hampshire, but have lived in Vermont on
and off since 1993 when I attended Saint Michael’s
College and studied Biology. In 2005, I completed my
Master of Education, and I currently teach
Kindergarten full-time in Burlington.
I began practicing Yoga in 1998. I started teaching
Yoga in 1999, and teaching at Yoga Vermont in 2000. I
was originally trained in Ashtanga Yoga with David
Swenson. Since then, I have studied with many
well-known teachers from around the world. Through my
study of Yoga and my deliberate decision to explore
many different styles of Yoga, I have experienced a
spiritual evolution in both my personal practice and
teaching. My practice began as a very "physical"
practice and has become a spiritual, thoughtful and
reflective journey.
Both my teaching and personal practice have been most
influenced by the teachings of T.K.V Desikachar, as
well as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. I truly believe
that personal practice must be fluid, adaptable, and
constantly evolving to accommodate the rest of our
lives. To cultivate this attitude, I challenge my own
students to be reflective, listen to their bodies, and
to leave their expectations at the door. Besides
asana, in my classes we study the scriptures, chant,
practice pranyama, meditate, modify, sweat, and almost
always laugh.
Now that I have recently become a mother, I have seen
able to explore a new and wonderful aspect of my
personal practice. Throughout my pregnancy I continued
to both practice and teach. Being pregnant helped me
become more in touch with my own body, and encouraged
me to explore more restorative asana and pranyama, as
well as ways to modify my existing practice and
teaching style. During my labor and delivery, the
mental and physical impact of my yoga practice was
immeasurable. As a new mother, I have been really
enjoying sharing my practice with my son, Silas. I
practice both with and without him, and realize the
importance of both in my life. During the summer of
2007, I will begin teaching "Mommy and Me" classes to
help new moms discover ways to share their practice
with their babies.
At Yoga Vermont, you’ll find me at almost any class. I
believe that every teacher and every class presents a
unique learning experience and I love the diversity of
classes offered at the studio. I am constantly
inspired by the wealth of knowledge, insight and
energy that all of the instructors at the studio
bring. However, I am most inspired by the students.
The fresh energy of new and old students alike, never
ceases to amaze me.
