Class Descriptions

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is a moving meditation. Physical techniques of inner focus create a one-pointed state of mind – Eka grata.  We are happy to work with students individually or in groups.  Ashtanga Yoga is our foundation here at Yoga Vermont, we love the philosophy and the practice.  

Ashtanga Yoga – Morning Mysore sessions offer an opportunity to learn Ashtanga Yoga as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Students are introduced to the tradition one piece of information at a time, developing the discipline of self practice, with the guidance of the instructor. Students arrive any time between 6:00 & 7:00 am to close out by 7:30 am.  This open start time encourages the independence of the practitioner and allows each person to practice within his/her endurance level or time frame.  This is an excellent method for committing the Ashtanga series to memory.

Ashtanga Yoga – Primary Series classes are  led to the extent that is appropriate for each class session.  If there are beginners present then there will be more breath by breath instruction.  It is a perfect option for students who are just beginning this vigorous discipline, seasoned practitioners adding to their knowledge base or for everyday practice.  Led classes provide a structure that is enhances the fullness of ujjayi breath and helps keep the pace of practice even.  It is also a great way to support your friends in her/his discipline.

Ashtanga Yoga – Intermediate Series classes offer the same rhythm as the other Ashtanga classes with more back bending and endurance building.  If you have been practicing Ashtanga for six months you will enjoy this led class.

Ashtanga Yoga - Beginner Class or Beginner Series classes are designed around a workshop stye practice.  We begin at the beginning, helping with modifications and taking time to answer questions about breath, alignment, history, etc.  The goal of these classes is to make a person comfortable with movement on breath,  taking the asanas as they come.  

Ashtanga Yoga - Half Primary classes are a shortened Ashtanga practice.  Three sun salute A, three sun salute B, all of standing, primary through boat (navasana) and closing sequence.  The prefect class to get the Ashtanga Love and deal with the time crunch in life.   

Vinyasa Yoga is breath-synchronized movement from one asana to the next,  just like Ashtanga.  Instructors incorporate the strong breathing style of ujjayi, isometrics, the Ashtanga pace and add their own flare. These classes are led by demonstration.  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to practice in a way most appropriate for him/her . All of our instructors have their own favorite vinyasa flow's they incorporate into their classes, it would be rare for two classes to be the same.

Grateful Dead Hour is a strong Vinyasa class with a different live show set list each week.  You know what it's about!  Peace.  Love.  Freedom.

Yin/Yang classes combine deeply restorative poses (yin yoga) with a vinyasa practice (yang yoga) to stretch and strengthen your body.  The class begins and ends with yin yoga poses designed to ground and soothe you while the vinyasa practice in between is meant to strengthen and take you out of the usual day thought patterns.
